Herman Engels studied at the Lemmens Institute (Leuven) and the Music Conservatories of Antwerp and Brussels.

He studied conducting for choirs under Hans Grischkat (Stuttgart) and Wilhelm Ehmann (St.Moritz) and for orchestras under Otmar Suitner (Mozarteum Salzburg) and Pierre Dervaux (Paris).

Herman Engels has been conducting in Belgium as well as abroad. He was the second director and assistant of Vic Nees at the BRTN radio choir in Brussels. In the Netherlands, he conducted and taught at the Music academies in Utrecht and the Hague. Also Herman was invited by the University of the Philippines (Manila) and the Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica (San José) to conduct a master class and concerts.

Other performances by Herman include: The Flanders Festival, Internationales Jugendfestspieltreffen Bayreuth , Easter Festival Prague, The Süddeutsche Rundfunkchor(SDR) Stuttgart, the Musici de Praga, the Prager Collegium ,the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra Manila, the Westdeutscher Rundfunkchor (WDR) Köln , Frankfurter Volkal Solisten, Radio France Paris, State Opera Orchestra Budapest (Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra), Slovak Sinfonietta (Statni Komorni Orchestra Zilna), Jihoceska Statni Komorni Filharmonie Ceske Budejovice (Budweis ,CZ), Debrecen Philharmonic Orchestra (Hungary) ,the ElblandPhilharmonie (D), the Bayerischer Rundfunkchor (BR) München,the Norddeutscher Rundfunkchor (NDR) Hamburg, the Moscou New Chamber Orchestra, the Budapest Chamber Orchestra ( concerttour in Brasil) , the Janacek-Philharmonie Ostrava (CZ) , the Martinu Philharmonie (CZ), the Dvorak Collegium (CZ), the Czech Virtuosi (Brno), the Filharmonie Hradec Kralové (CZ), the Moravska Philharmonie (CZ) ,etc. He collaborated in the opera Orfeo by Walter Hus for Antwerp 1993, when it was Europe's 'Capital of Culture'.

Herman is currently conducting and teaching at the academies of music in Leuven and Mechelen, and is "conductor in residence" of the Association of Christian Employers and Business Executives in Belgium (Flanders).
